Francesco Hayez – Crucifixion with Mary Magdalene kneeling and weeping (1827).

There’s a lot of bizarre graphic Catholic art (I’m assuming this is Catholic – it certainly seems Catholic). My grandmother, during my father’s childhood, had a portrait in her living room depicting the seven sorrows of Mary as literal knives (or some other pointy implements, I’m fuzzy on the details) in her heart, in gruesomely graphic detail.

Catholicism is strange.
